Where ink meets the irreversible

Oil and acrylic works that sit between abstraction and memory; made in a light-filled studio on the edge of the coast.

The Artist

A conversation with materials that are beyond control

Elodie Burls in her studio, working on a canvas

In my work, I explore the threshold between inside and outside, where the perceived boundaries between architecture, nature, and self begin to blur. Inspired by the fragility of our existence, I often incorporate permeable materials like glass, which symbolize the delicate balance between protection and vulnerability.

As I create these liminal spaces, I ponder the future of our relationship with the natural world. Will we need to bring the outdoors in, to survive as a species? My art imagines a world where the distinctions between interior and exterior, nature and nurture, are increasingly ambiguous.

While my work touches on apocalyptic themes, it's tempered with a hopeful streak. I'm drawn to the possibility that, even in the face of uncertainty, we might find ways to adapt, to redefine our connection to the world around us. The occasional chair or platform in my paintings serves as an invitation, beckoning the viewer to step into this uncertain future, and to contemplate the possibilities that lie ahead.
